The South Korean health department said on the 22nd that no deaths have been found to be directly related to the vaccine and will continue to promote the free influenza vaccination program.
According to South Korean media reports, on the 16th of this month, a 17-year-old high school student in Incheon died two days after being vaccinated. Subsequently, deaths after flu vaccination occurred in various parts of Korea.
From October 20 to 22, the number of deaths continued to rise. The age of the deceased was mostly in the 60s to 80s, and the death time after vaccination was relatively short. Among them, an elderly man in his 70s who lived in Daegu was vaccinated. He lost consciousness about 40 minutes after the vaccine, and died 12 hours later.
In order to ensure the safety of the vaccine and the health of the people, the Korean Medical Association called on the 22nd that the government should suspend the vaccination plan before confirming the safety of the flu vaccine.
Cui Daji, President of the Korean Medical Association : We recommend that the current influenza vaccination plan be suspended for a week to ensure vaccine safety.
However, on the same day, the Director of the Korean Disease Management Agency told the National Assembly that despite the increase in deaths, experts believe that this is not directly related to the vaccine.
The Minister of Health and Welfare of South Korea stated that the free seasonal influenza vaccination program will not be suspended , staff will investigate the cause of death, and will once again thoroughly inspect the entire process from vaccine production to distribution involving multiple government agencies.
However, the news of the deaths of influenza vaccination recipients still caused concerns among the Korean people. In some places , the number of influenza vaccination patients has been reduced by a third .
Cui Yunhao , deputy director of the Seoul Western Branch of the Korean Health Management Association : Usually, about 2,000 people come here every day to get the flu vaccine. Today, only 600 to 700 people came, which is about one-third of the usual rate. Many people have asked us whether it is safe to vaccinate.
In order to reduce the burden of the medical system in responding to both the new crown pneumonia epidemic and winter flu, South Korea expanded its influenza vaccination program this year,
intending to provide free vaccinations to approximately 19 million young people and the elderly. When the plan was launched at the end of September, it was discovered that the delivery of about 5 million doses of free vaccines had not been stored in accordance with the specifications. Therefore
