According to today’s Russian TV station RT News reported on the 22nd, the Swedish government has cancelled the special quarantine recommendations for people over 70 years old, believing that the serious psychological and physical consequences of quarantine on them exceed the risk of contracting the new crown virus.
Although the number of new crown infection cases has increased, the Swedish government claimed that the risk of infection is still low and announced that it will cancel the recommendation to isolate the elderly from society.
Swedish Minister of Health Lena Hallengren told reporters in a speech on Thursday that the government has cancelled specific recommendations for people over 70.
The head of the Swedish Public Health Agency, John Karlsson, accompanied the Minister of Health to the media conference. Carlson claimed that the elderly have been greatly affected by measures to limit the pandemic. He pointed out that the mental and physical consequences for those who have been isolated from the world are severe.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Swedish government has recommended that elderly people over 70 and special risk groups restrict physical contact, avoid using public transportation, and stay away from shops and other places frequented by people.
Unlike European countries, Sweden did not take strong measures early to protect its citizens from the impact of the epidemic. On the contrary, the country is trying to isolate the most vulnerable groups in society while taking minimal measures to reduce the spread of the virus among the rest of the population.
However, the epidemic situation in Sweden is not better than other countries. The country currently has one of the highest death rates from the new coronavirus in the world. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the country has accumulated 107,355 confirmed cases and 5,929 deaths. On Wednesday, the health service recorded 975 new confirmed cases and 7 new deaths, which was higher than the average for the summer months.
