April 2 – According to the Guardian on April 1, UNESCO confirmed that at least 53 important cultural sites in Ukraine were destroyed after the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.
A UNESCO spokesman said, “This is the latest list, but it is not exhaustive. Experts are verifying a series of reports submitted by the Ukrainian government.” The agency published a list of 53 damaged sites, located in northern and eastern Ukraine.
The speaker said that UNESCO verified the information provided by the Uzbek side based on satellite imagery and the reports of witnesses at the scene.
The damaged sites include more than a dozen places in the eastern part of Kharkov, involving churches and more modern sites, which have been heavily shelled. In addition, five sites are located in Kiev and five are located in the Chernigov region of the northern region of Ukraine, where there are many historical sites.
According to UNESCO, 29 religious sites, 16 historical buildings, 4 museums and 4 monuments have been confirmed to have been damaged.
