On 25 August, local time, Morocco expressed regret at Algeria’s decision to sever diplomatic relations between the two countries. Morocco’s foreign ministry called the decision “completely unjustified” but said it was also expected given the recent escalation.
Morocco’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it categorically rejected Algeria’s “baseless and absurd excuse” to sever ties with the country, Al Jazeera reported on August 25.
Moroccan Prime Minister Osmani also issued a statement on the Maghreb Voice website saying that he deeply regrets the current developments and hopes to overcome them as soon as possible.
According to Xinhua News Agency reported on August 25, Algerian Foreign Minister Ramamra announced on the 24th that Algeria decided to sever diplomatic relations with Morocco from now on. He accused Moroccan officials at the United Nations of instigating relations between ethnic minorities in the country and the central government of Afghanistan, bringing the discord between the two countries to a peak.
Morocco and Algeria have long had strained relations over Western Sahara, and their land borders have been closed. On 18 August this year, Algerian President Al-Teben told a security conference that Algeria needed to re-examine its relations because of Morocco’s increasing “hostile actions” against Algeria.
