May 29 (CNN) — About 400,000 people have been evacuated from the city of Goma, the capital of the democratic republic, according to a spokesman for North Kivu province in northeastern Congo (DRC) on Friday, CNN reported. UNICEF says nearly 280,000 of the 400,000 people, most of whom were evacuated on foot, were carrying mattresses and cooking utensils along the way.
A spokesman for the Congolese government said radar maps showed that the Crater of Niragongo was continuing to expand, and local volcano observatories had reported continued expansion of underground magma, excluding magma eruptions on the ground and on the lake.
