May 17 2021 The United States and the European Union said in a joint statement on the same day that they will open a dialogue on resolving tariff disputes over steel and aluminum trade, CNBC reported Wednesday.
In the statement, the U.S. trade representative and the European Commission said the two sides are “committed to immediate dialogue to find a solution by the end of the year.” The European Commission’s executive vice-president, Don Mbrovskis, said on social media that the move would give both sides room to work together to find a solution to the dispute.
CNBC said the previous U.S. administration imposed tariffs of 25 percent and 10 percent on STEEL and aluminum in the European Union in 2018, citing national security concerns. The EU has since tried several times to reach a deal with the US, but failed and took the conflict to the World Trade Organisation.
