May 16 2021, the Chicago Police Department reported that two Chicago police officers were shot on the west side of the city, the current life-threatening, suspected gunman was also shot by police, is now in stable condition.
Chicago Police Chief David Brown said officers rushed to the scene of the shooting on South Lawndale Avenue and saw a man in an open alley nearby when they approached the man and suddenly turned and opened fire on him.
“The criminal ignored the police and tried to kill them,” Brown said. One officer was shot in the hand and the other in the shoulder and leg. Police then opened fire and shot the man in the leg.
Police said the man had been detained and his weapons had been seized. Brown said it was the 29th time in 2021 that a suspect had opened fire on a Chicago police officer.
