May 9 2021, Nigeria’s emergency management department said on the 9th, the country’s north-central Niger state on the evening of the 8th shipwreck, killing 28 people were killed and 7 others missing.
Niger state emergency management department head Ahmed Inga 9, said in a statement, a wooden boat carrying 100 people on the evening of the 8th in the state’s Hiroro region when it hit a tree stump in the river, resulting in damage to the hull sank. Rescuers have so far rescued 65 people and recovered 28 bodies of the victims, with seven others missing.
Inga said rescuers were still searching for the missing.
Shipwrecks are common in Nigeria due to overloading and lack of safety measures.
