Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a high-level meeting of the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday that Russia opposes the idea of totalitarianism imposed by the United States and the European Union. Lavrov believes that western countries are increasingly unilaterally imposing illegal sanctions on other countries against a background that has no basis in international law, which runs counter to democratic and multilateral principles.
At the same day’s meeting, Lavrov also called on Western countries to respect the sovereign equality of other countries, not to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries and through diplomatic means to resolve disputes, and renounce the use of force threats.
Lavrov stressed that Western countries are trying to push for the rules set out in the backroom operation and impose them on other countries, which is driving history backwards.
At the initiative of China, which holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council this month, the Security Council held a high-level meeting on the 7th by video “Maintaining International Peace and Security: Maintaining Multilateralism and the International System with the United Nations at its Core”.
