On the evening of the 3rd local time, an elevated track collapsed in the Travac district southeast of Mexico City, the Mexican capital, and several carriages of the passing train fell from the collapse. At least 24 people have been killed and 79 injured in the accident.
It was reported that around 10:30 p.m., the elevated track collapsed as the train passed by, and some cars were crushed under the collapsed bridge. The accident occurred near the Olivos station on the 12th rail line in Mexico City. Rescue efforts were suspended amid fears of more car crashes.
Authorities dispatched a crane to secure the falling carriage before the rescue effort could continue. Fire and ambulance crews are still at the scene and searching for survivors in the rubble.
Families of those trapped: We’ve just arrived here, they’re not allowing us in, we don’t know anything, so far we’ve only known that. My brother is still under the rubble, imagine how many tons of debris they are going to remove, and we want to know what’s going on there.
It is understood that the collapsed elevated track was built about 10 years ago. Mexico City Mayor Claudia Hinbaum, who arrived at the scene after the incident, said rescuers were still searching for survivors and promised a full investigation.
