May 4 2021, U.S. President Joe Biden said Thursday that he hopes to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin during his visit to Europe in June.
Biden spoke at the White House the same day about the response to the coronavirus outbreak and the coronavirus vaccine program. In response to questions from the media after the speech, Biden said he hoped to meet with Putin during his visit to Europe, and the U.S. is preparing for that.
Biden will attend the G7 summit in the UK from June 11 to 13, followed by a NATO summit in Brussels, Belgium. It will be his first foreign trip since taking office in January.
Biden said on April 15th that he had proposed a summit with Putin in Europe this summer to discuss bilateral relations. Russian presidential aide Yurshakov said on the 25th of the same month that Putin and Biden may meet in June.
U.S.-Russian relations have been strained in recent years. Since biden’s administration took office, the two sides have achieved limited cooperation in arms control, but differences over Ukraine, cybersecurity, human rights, and election meddling have intensified.
