Myanmar’s state television (MRTV) reported on May 4th that it had banned the installation of satellite television receivers across the country in order to safeguard national security, and violators would be sentenced to one year in prison and a fine of 500,000 kyats (about $320).
Myanmar’s state television reported in the same day’s program that illegal media and foreign media through satellite television to spread false information, undermining national security and public order. Under the Myanmar Radio and Television Act, the Government outlawed the installation of satellite television receivers (commonly known as “satellite pots”) and violators were punishable by one year’s imprisonment and a fine of 500,000 kyats.
There are currently three ways of watching television in Myanmar: wireless television (via tv antenna), cable television (via set-top box) and satellite television (via satellite television receiver), and the other two are currently unaffected.
