On the evening of April 24, local time, the Turkish Foreign Ministry summoned U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Satterfield to express Turkey’s strong response to U.S. President Joe Biden’s statement on the Armenian “genocide” issued the same day.
According to a statement issued by the Turkish Foreign Ministry, Turkey told Ambassador Satterfield that Biden’s statement had no historical or legal basis and was unacceptable, and that Turkey completely rejected and strongly condemned the statement.
Turkey’s foreign ministry said Biden’s statement was invalid from an international law perspective and deeply hurt the feelings of the Turkish people, causing healing wounds in relations between the two countries.
Earlier in the day, U.S. President Joe Biden issued a statement formally confirming that the Ottoman Empire had committed “genocide” against Armenians.
