April 24, local time, azerbaijan’s presidential website announced that President Aliyev held telephone talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the same day.
In a telephone conversation, the two heads of state condemned the U.S. president’s statement that Turkey was committing genocide against Armenia.
Azerbaijan’s President Aliyev called the U.S. president’s decision a “historic mistake.” Sources said that the Azerbaijani side considers the U.S. decision unacceptable and seriously undermines the new trend of regional cooperation.
Earlier in the day, U.S. President Joe Biden issued a statement formally confirming that the Ottoman Empire had committed “genocide” against Armenians.
Biden also became the first sitting U.S. president to formally recognize the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman Empire during World War I as “genocide.”
The so-called “Armenian Massacre” refers to the mass armenian deaths during the Ottoman rule of Turkey from 1915 to 1917.
