April 21 Panama’s Ministry of Public Security has announced the formal establishment of a humanitarian border security agency to ensure the safety of migrants crossing the jungles of Darlene province into Panama.
The province of Dahlian, Panama, is reported to be located on the border between Panama and Colombia and has a jungle area of about 575,000 hectares.
Due to a lack of management, the jungle became the “only way” for South American immigrants to reach the United States. Migrants travel through the jungle without water or food and are unable to cope with gangs, wildlife and other threats.
Panama’s Ministry of Public Security recently announced the formal establishment of the Humanitarian Border Security Agency in order to ensure the safety of migrants crossing the jungles of Darlene province into Panama.
It is reported that the Humanitarian Border Security Agency will be composed mainly of members of the State Border Service, about 150 people have completed training courses on the protection of the human rights of migrants. In addition, the Security Service will be equally responsible for the protection of border areas.
Public Security Minister Peter Pino said recent migrants were entering Panama “in a controlled manner” through the Darlene border and that Panama was coordinating with Colombian authorities to jointly guarantee the basic human rights and security of migrants.
Pino stressed that the Panamanian government’s measures during the Coronavirus outbreak have proved that Panama has been working to improve the human rights situation of migrants.
