Djiboutian Interior Minister Sheikh told the media on the 10th that the preliminary results of the presidential election held on the 9th showed that the current president and the candidate of the ruling party, the Progressive People’s Alliance, Guelleh, has obtained more than 98% of the votes, significantly ahead of other candidates and will be re-elected as the President of Djibouti.
“Thank you for your trust, thank you Djibouti, let’s continue together,” Guellet said on his personal social media.
According to the Djibouti Constitution, candidates who get more than 50% of the votes in the first round of the presidential election are directly elected.
This is the fourth time that Guellet, 73, has been elected since he took office as President of Djibouti in 1999. He was re-elected three times in 2005, 2011 and 2016. In 2010, Guellet moved the constitutional amendment to change the presidential term from six to five years, and introduced the age limit for the president to not exceed 75 years, which means that Guellet will not be able to participate in the next election.
It is understood that the final results of the general election will be officially released by the Constitutional Council in the next few days.
