It is worth mentioning that some Taiwanese media have noticed that Wright wrote to the World Health Organization (WHO) in May 2020 with some U.S. representatives urging WHO to allow Taiwan authorities to send people to participate in the World Health Assembly (WHA).
According to U.S. media, Wright’s congressional office said in a statement that Congressman Ron Wright died on February 7, 2021 at the age of 67. Wright tested positive for the coronavirus on January 21 this year, according to the statement.
“I have some mild symptoms, but overall, I feel good,” he said in the statement.
Wright is also a cancer patient, according to Wright’s congressional office statement. U.S. President Joe Biden said in a statement Monday that Wright was “a brave fighter against cancer and COVID-19”.
U.S. media outlets pointed out that Wright was the first sitting congressman to die after contracting the novel coronavirus.
On December 29 last year, Luke Letlow, who had just become an elected member of the United States, died at the age of 41.
It is worth mentioning that at a time when the news of the death came, some Taiwanese media pointed out that in May 2020, Wright and more than 200 other members of the House of Representatives sent a letter to Tedros Tedros, Secretary-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), urging him to allow the Taiwan authorities to send people to participate in the World Health Assembly (WHA).
He also tweeted, “Taiwan, which has achieved good epidemic prevention, should be included in the agenda of the conference.”
Previously, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hua Chunying said at a regular press conference on May 8, 2020 that Taiwan’s so-called attempt to join the World Health Organization and participate in the World Health Assembly is not for the health and well-being of the Taiwanese people at all, but for thorough political manipulation, and will not get it.
Hua Chunying said that as we all know, the 26th United Nations General Assembly adopted Resolution 2758 in October 1971, recognizing that the People’s Republic of China is the only legitimate government representing the whole Chinese people.
It has long completely resolved the issue of China’s representation in the United Nations politically, legal and procedurally, fully reflecting the union.
The one-China principle adhered to by the country. There is only one China in the world, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, which is the general consensus of the international community. The United Nations has repeatedly reiterated that it will insist on dealing with the Taiwan issue in accordance with General Assembly resolution 2758.
As a specialized agency of the United Nations, the World Health Organization should abide by the resolutions of the General Assembly. WHO resolution 25.1 reaffirmed General Assembly resolution 2758 and confirmed the issue of China’s representation in WHO.
