Kyodo News has just reported that Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga attended a meeting of the House of Representatives Budget Committee on the 4th.
The chairman of the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee Yoshiro Mori, who was introduced by opposition members, despised women’s remarks and said it “should not happen.” As for the voice demanding Yoshiro Mori’s resignation, the report said that Yoshihide Suga stated that “the Olympics should be held with a lot of understanding and welcome.”
Yoshiro Mori, chairman of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games Organizing Committee (Tokyo 2020 Olympic Organizing Committee), complained at a meeting on the 3rd about the gender diversity of the Japanese Olympic Committee’s board members that women talk too much and have “Strong sense of competition,” he suggested limiting women’s speaking time.
Yoshiro Mori’s remarks involving women immediately sparked controversy.
The Japan Times said that on the morning of the 4th, the hashtag “Yoshiro Mori, please resign” became popular on the Japanese Twitter platform. Some users called on sponsors to pressure the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee to remove Yoshiro Mori.
Yoshiro Mori subsequently apologized for his sexist remarks involving women, saying that his previous remarks violated the Olympic spirit.
He said that he withdrew these remarks, but “has no intention of resigning.”
