January 29th local time, the fifth group meeting of the Syrian Constitutional Council over a week ended.
“It was a disappointing week,” said Jill Peterson, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Syria.
Jill Peterson pointed out that the panel of 15 members of the Syrian government, the opposition and civil society organizations is aimed at drafting a new constitution before the Syrian elections.
However, the continuous arguments made the meeting impossible.
Jill Peterson said that the work proposal submitted by the Syrian opposition and the United Nations Secretary-General’s Office for Syria was rejected.
He pointed out that this approach did not work.
The parties needed to discuss and formulate a clear work plan for the next meeting, and the negotiating parties also needed to find commonalities for their own.
Jill Peterson said that many agendas on the Constitutional Council have been discussed for more than a year, and the drafting of a new constitution has not yet begun.
In addition, Jill Peterson said he would travel to Syria for further consultations.
