According to the news released on the Russian President’s website on the evening of the 29th, Russian President Putin has signed a bill to extend the Russian-American Treaty on Strategic Arms Reduction.
The bill provides for the extension of the treaty until February 5, 2026.
On the 27th of this month, the Russian State Duma (the lower house of parliament) and the Federal Council (the upper house of parliament) approved the extension of the Russian-US New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty for five years in rapid procedures, respectively.
The New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty was signed by the United States and Russia in 2010 and entered into force on February 5, 2011.
It is valid for 10 years. After the expiration of the U.S.-Russia INF Treaty in 2019, this treaty became the only arms control treaty between the two countries. Recently, Russian President Putin and U.S. President Biden talked on the phone.
Russian and American leaders reached an agreement on the extension of the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty on the phone.
Putin then submitted a draft law extending the New Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty to the Russian State Duma.
