The Hill said that the move made Padilla the first Latino senator in California’s history. Harris wrote in the letter: “I hereby resign from my position as a senator from California, effective January 18, 2021 at 24:00 EST.

The report mentioned that Harris talked about his resignation in an opinion article published in the US media on the 18th, entitled “It is an honor to be a California senator, but resignation is not a farewell.”
