January 14th – On theĀ evening of the 13th local time, a riot broke out in Brussels, the capital of Belgium.
More than 500 demonstrators set fire to the city and attacked King Philip’s car with stones and other throwing objects.
Local police said that at least four policemen were injured in the riot.
According to a BBC report on the 13th, demonstrators gathered mainly near a station in northern Brussels.
A video showed that they used Molotov cocktails to attack nearby buildings and set fire to some public facilities.
King Philip of Belgium’s car was passing through the area at that time, and was also attacked by demonstrators with stones and other throwing objects.
Philip was on his way back to Lacan Palace from his work station.
The Belgian Minister of Justice said later that he had arrested about 100 demonstrators.
The riots were caused by the death of a 23-year-old black man in police custody.
On the evening of January 9, he was arrested by the police on suspicion of violating the curfew regulations.
Police said that the man had lost consciousness when he was sent to the police station and then died after being taken to the hospital.
