For the first time in history, 32 teams participated in the World Men’s Handball Championship. All the events will be held in four venues in Cairo, the capital of Egypt, and the coastal city of Alexandria, including the new capital stadium in the eastern suburbs of Cairo and the Hassan Mustafa Stadium in the western suburbs of Cairo.
Hassan Mustafa, president of the International Handball Federation, has previously said that anyone who violates the regulations on the prevention and control of the novel coronavirus epidemic will be disqualified for players participating in the men’s handball world championships. The Czech team announced before the game that the North Macedonian team would replace the team because the confirmed cases of COVID-19 exceeded the maximum number of people allowed in the competition.
At the same time, the U.S. national team was unable to participate because some of its members tested positive for COVID-19 before going to Egypt.
According to the announcement released on the website of the International Handball Federation, the Swiss team will replace the U.S. team.
In the opening match held on the night of the 13th, host Egypt defeated Chile 35-29 and currently ranks first in the group with two points.
Egypt’s best result in the previous championship was to finish fourth in the 2001 competition held in France.
