January 14th – On the 13th local time, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to pass the impeachment clause against Trump, becoming the first president in American history to be impeached twice.
Next, the Senate will decide whether to convict Trump. Later that day, Senate Republican leader Mitch mcconnell issued a statement clarifying the time of the Senate’s trial of impeachment clauses.
According to CNN, McConnell issued a statement after the impeachment clause against Trump was voted by the House of Representatives that the impeachment trial will not be earlier than January 19.
McConnell believes that “it would be in the best interest of the country if Congress and the executive body are fully focused on ensuring the security of the inauguration ceremony and the orderly transition of power over the next seven days.” McConnell also said that even if the Senate starts trials this week, it will not be able to make a final judgment until Trump leaves office.
Senate Democratic Party leader Schumer issued a statement saying that the trial will either start immediately or after the 19th, but the impeachment case will be tried anyway.
He also stressed that once Trump is convicted, the Senate will continue to vote on whether he will be banned from running for office in the future.
According to previous reports, the U.S. House of Representatives launched the impeachment process of Trump on the 11th, and released the final version of Trump’s impeachment clause on the 12th, accusing Trump of “sedition” of “impeachment and trial, disqualification of his presidency, and disqualification of relevant honor, credit and gainful positions”.
On the 13th, the House of Representatives passed the impeachment clause by 232 votes to 197, formally accusing Trump of “sedition”. Trump thus became the first president in American history to be impeached twice.
According to the U.S. Constitution, the House of Representatives is responsible for raising impeachment cases, and the Senate is responsible for impeachment cases. If two-thirds of congressional senators support impeachment, Trump will be convicted.
