January 12 – British Prime Minister Johnson said on the 11th that Britain is “racing against time” to promote its coronavirus vaccination plan.
The worst weeks of the pandemic are coming, says the UK government’s chief medical adviser.
The report said that a new and more infectious variant of the novel coronavirus is spreading rapidly among the population.
In parts of London, one in 20 people are infected, and the NHS is threatened with collapse as hospitals are crowded with patients.
The UK’s coronavirus death toll has been soaring and has now surpassed 81,000.
In an effort to contain the outbreak, the UK is rolling out its largest vaccination program in history, with about 15 million people vaccinated against the coronavirus by mid-February.
The UK government has so far approved three coronavirus vaccines for use, with plans to vaccinate tens of millions of people by spring and all adults by the fall.
“We’re racing against time, the NHS system is under threat and pressure, and ICU demand is rising…
Some places even lack oxygen supply,” Johnson said during a visit to a vaccination center.
Whitty, the chief medical adviser to the British government, said earlier that the situation will worsen the epidemic, and the next period will be the worst weeks in terms of the number of treatments.
Health Minister Matt Hancock revealed that more than 32,000 coronavirus patients are currently hospitalized, which is much higher than about 18,000 patients at the peak of the first wave of the epidemic in April 2020.
