According to CNN, on January 10th local time, the current President Trump of the United States ordered the flag to fly at half-mast until January 13 to mourn the two policemen who died in the congressional riots, Brian Hicknick and Howard Libengood.
On the 6th, Trump supporters rushed into the Capitol when the two policemen were on duty.
Congressional police announced on the 7th that Brian Hicknick died “because of an injury at work”. The statement said that Hicknik fainted after returning to his department office after being injured in contact with the mob.
He was taken to a local hospital and later died of his wounds. A law enforcement official told CNN that prosecutors in the U.S. Attorney’s Office plan to launch a murder investigation into Hicknick’s death.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ordered the next day that a flag was flown at half-mast at the U.S. Capitol to mourn.
Subsequently, Trump was criticized for not flying the flag at half-mast at the White House. On the 10th, congressional police said Howard Liebengood died while off duty, but did not specify the cause of death.
In a proclamation issued on the 10th, Trump wrote: “In honor of the policemen Brian Hicknick and Howard Liebengood, congressional policemen and all law enforcement agencies who died on Capitol Hill.
I hereby order that all U.S. flags be flown at half-mast until sunset on January 13 at the White House and all public buildings and sites, on all military posts in the District of Columbia, naval bases, all naval vessels of the Federal Government, and throughout the United States and its territories and territories.
