According to a report by Jane’s Defense Weekly on January 6, the South Korean navy recently announced the revised concept design of the country’s future light aircraft carrier.
The latest design renderings show that the light aircraft carrier has two islands and adopts a straight-through deck design rather than a slide-on.
The renderings also seem to confirm that the aircraft carrier will be equipped with F-35B stealth fighters, and the helicopter on board is somewhat similar in appearance to the MH-60R Seahawk helicopter developed by the United States.
The South Korean navy said that the final conceptual design may be further modified.
The website of “Defense Blog” reported on January 4 that South Korea is seeking to accelerate the development of “light aircraft carriers” and obtain F-35B fighters.
According to the report, the South Korean military has finalized a plan to seriously promote the light aircraft carrier project this year. The construction cost of the aircraft carrier is about 1.74 billion US dollars.
The South Korean government plans to complete the core technology research and development by 2024, and the aircraft carrier will be delivered around 2033.
