It is reported that at about 2 p.m. local time on the 29th, prisoners in Waikato prison lit mattresses and filled with a lot of smoke.
The lit cell is the oldest building in the prison.
A spokesman for the Department of Corrections said that firefighters can only go to put out the fire after all prisoners have surrendered.
At present, firefighters are monitoring the fire outside and cannot enter the interior of the building to assess the scale of the fire or damage.
The spokesman also said that although the damage to the building will be assessed ex post facto, it is unlikely to re-carrison prisoners here in the future.
On the morning of the 30th local time, a statement issued by the Reform through Labour Bureau said that there were no casualties at the scene, but the damage to the facility was “significant”.
