December 30 According to a report by New Zealand Skywire Network, on the 29th local time, riots broke out in Waikato Prison, New Zealand, and prisoners lit a fire.
The incident caused serious damage, and a building in the prison was almost completely burned down. At present, prisoners in the prison have been confronted with the police for nearly 24 hours, and 16 prisoners are still unwilling to surrender.
It is reported that at about 2 p.m. local time on the 29th, prisoners in Waikato prison lit mattresses and filled with a lot of smoke.
The lit cell is the oldest building in the prison.
A spokesman for the Department of Corrections said that firefighters can only go to put out the fire after all prisoners have surrendered.
At present, firefighters are monitoring the fire outside and cannot enter the interior of the building to assess the scale of the fire or damage.
The spokesman also said that although the damage to the building will be assessed ex post facto, it is unlikely to re-carrison prisoners here in the future.
On the morning of the 30th local time, a statement issued by the Reform through Labour Bureau said that there were no casualties at the scene, but the damage to the facility was “significant”.
Waikato prison is still in lockdown.
