Dutch prosecutors said on Wednesday that a man invaded U.S. President Trump’s Twitter account in October, The Hague, AFP reported on December 16. However, prosecutors said that the so-called “moral hacker” would not face charges. Washington and Twitter denied the matter.
According to Dutch media reports, the man’s name is Victor Gerwell and hacked into Trump’s Twitter account by guessing a password on October 16.
The White House and Twitter both strongly denied reports that Trump’s account had been hacked.
According to the report, 44, Gerwell revealed the hacking, saying that the password he guessed was “maga2020!”, that is, Trump’s campaign slogan “Make America Great Again”.
“We believe this hacker actually hacked into Trump’s Twitter account, but meets the criteria set by case law for moral hackers to avoid being charged,” the Dutch Public Prosecutor’s Office said.
Prosecutors also said that hacking is a criminal offence in the Netherlands, but “special circumstances, also known as ‘responsible disclosure’ in practice”, may prevent prosecutors from taking measures.
The Dutch prosecutor’s findings are based on an investigation by the police’s specialized network department called “Team High-tech Crime”.
Prosecutors said: “The hackers and the U.S. authorities have been informed of the investigation.”
