December 14, according to media reports such as the French newspaper Team, Guillard Hollier, a famous French coach who had coached Liverpool and the French national team, died at the age of 73.
Shortly before his death, Gérard Houllier had just undergone an aortic aneurysm surgery in Paris. Before his death, he texted a reporter of Team, saying, “I’m having a hard time now, but I’ll try to get through it.”
Born in 1947, Hollier has coached Paris, France, Liverpool, Lyon, Villa and other teams in his career. While coaching Paris, Hollier helped the team win the first Ligue 1 championship in the team’s history in the 1985-86 season.

For Liverpool, Hollier was the one who almost gave his life to the team – in October 2001, at the break of Liverpool’s Premier League match against Leeds United, Hollier’s aorta ruptured and had to undergo more than 11 hours of emergency bypass surgery. Fortunately, after rescue, Hollier finally turned to safety.
During Hollier’s coaching, Liverpool has grown up with many famous stars and team history, such as Owen, Carragher, Gerrard and so on.
After leaving Liverpool, Hollier returned to France to coach Lyon Club and helped the team win two Ligue 1 championships and two French Super Cup championships.
After Hollier’s death, many footballers sent condolences. Reinkel, a famous football player who played for Liverpool’s old rival, said that Hollier was “one of the smartest, warmest and cutest people in football history”.
Michael Owen, a famous Liverpool player, said, “I am heartbroken to hear that my old coach Hollier died regrettably. He is a great coach and a person who really cares about others.”
