December 8th, French National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office made sentencing statements in response to the 14 defendants in the January 2015 Charlie Hebdo series of terrorist attacks, demanding that the court award sentences ranging from five to life sentences according to their respective criminal liabilities.
Among them, the prosecution requested that Ali Riza Polat, the main suspect of the 11 defendants present for trial, was sentenced to life imprisonment, a French Turkish man suspected of providing logistical and financial support for the whole series of terrorist attacks.
For the three defendants who were tried in absentia because their whereabouts were unknown, the prosecution also requested that they be sentenced to life imprisonment, 30 years and 20 years in prison, respectively.
On September 2 this year, the Paris Special Serious Crimes Court opened a hearing on a series of terrorist attacks on the editorial office of Charlie Hebdo and Jewish food stores in the eastern suburbs of Paris.
Since the three suspects who carried out the terrorist attack were shot dead by the police at the time of the incident, the 14 defendants involved in the trial were all suspects who assisted in preparing or carrying out the terrorist attack. In addition, the proceedings are also involved in the civil proceedings, consisting of 200 victims or their families, 94 lawyers, 144 witnesses and 14 experts.
On January 7, 2015, the suspect Kuachi brothers launched an attack on Charlie Hebdo’s editorial office because they were dissatisfied with the satirical comic cover based on religious figures, killing 12 people.
On January 9, while police surrounded the Kuachi brothers in a printing house in the northern suburbs of Paris, another suspect, Curry Barry, took hostages and killed four people at a Jewish food store in the eastern suburbs of Paris.
On the same day, the police launched a general attack almost simultaneously in both places, killing three suspects. It was later confirmed that a policewoman in the southern suburbs of Paris was also killed by Currybari on January 8.
The video recorded before his death also said that the three attacks were planned in the name of extremist organizations.
