On December 4th local time, the National Vaccine Advisory Committee (NVAC) voted not to recommend issuing emergency use authorizations for children to vaccinate against the novel coronavirus.
“Given children are usually suffering from mild illness, the NVAC will issue a warning against issuing emergency use authorizations for the COVID-19 vaccine to children,” the committee wrote in its recommendation.
The committee made recommendations to the Department of Health and Human Services on the best way to provide vaccines and voted on a series of recommendations from Assistant Secretary of Health Brett Giroir on the safety and surveillance of COVID-19 vaccines.
The NVAC recommends that vaccine developers begin to include pregnant women as subjects in the second phase of their trials.
The FDA Advisory Committee on Vaccines and Related Biological Products will meet on December 10 to discuss the emergency use authorization application of Pfizer’s coronavirus vaccine.
The FDA may impose restrictions on any emergency use authorization. The vaccination priority is then determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
