On December 4th, local time, the Spanish Supreme Court announced the revocation of the commutation of sentences of the Catalan District Court for nine senior officials who initiated and participated in the 2017 “independence” referendum.
The Supreme Court held that it was too early to commute the sentence to the lightest “third level” at this stage, and it would take longer to fully assess the performance of the prisoner before deciding whether to change the sentence.
At the same time, the Supreme Court refused to apply article 100.2 of the Spanish Prison Regulations on nine prisoners, which allows prisoners to serve prison sentences in lieu of prison sentences with volunteering and other work.
On October 14, 2019, the Spanish Supreme Court sentenced nine former senior officials of the autonomous region of Catalonia to 9 to 13 years in prison for sedition, including Oriol Honcras, the former vice president of the autonomous region, the longest sentence and sentenced him to 13 years in prison.
