London, December 3rd An explosion occurred on the 3rd at a wastewater treatment facility of a sewage treatment plant in the Avonmouth area of Bristol, southwest England, killing four people and injuring one.
Preliminary findings released by local police that night showed that the explosion occurred in a huge metal vertical silo of the sewage treatment plant, which contained treated and recovered biosolids. The top of the silo was blown open, and five people worked on or near the top of the silo at the time of the accident. Three of the dead were employees of the local water company and one was a contractor.
Witnesses at the scene said that loud noises were heard during the explosion, and buildings near the scene of the accident vibrated. The local fire and rescue department came to the scene to carry out rescue after receiving the alarm. At present, the sewage treatment plant has been closed, and the police have ruled out the possibility of terrorist attacks. The cause of the explosion remains to be further investigated.
British Prime Minister Johnson expressed his condolences on Twitter for the victims of the accident and was “deeply saddened” by the casualties in the explosion.
