British military confronted the stowaways.
The British military urgently dispatched a special ship service team. After a 10-hour standoff, SBS landed 16 commandos on the ship. The operation also used two Royal Navy “Merlin” helicopters and two “Wildcat” helicopters. A frigate “Richmond” was also placed on standby. It took less than seven minutes for SBS to take control of the ship and seven stowaways were arrested. The preliminary report confirmed that all crew members on board were safe and sound.
Prior to this, similar incidents occurred in British waters. In December 2018, a group of stowaways launched an attack on a cargo ship at the mouth of the Thames. Stowaways from Nigeria and Liberia began to attack the crew after they were found hiding on a boat bound for Tilbury Wharf in Essex. In January this year, they were arrested and imprisoned after being tried at the Central Criminal Court in London.
