According to US media, the sonic boom may be caused by a meteor falling on the ground.

The police are investigating the cause.” Another Twitter netizen said: “I’m here. Syracuse heard the explosion and hopes everyone is safe.” Many people echoed their messages, indicating that their houses are shaking. Another netizen said: “My first reaction was to check if there were any fallen trees on the roof. My next thought was that the meteorite fell down!” Another netizen joked: “Wow, yes. Who made the aliens take over the earth in December?”
Lunsford, a staff member of the American Meteor Association, said that the people heard the roar after noon Eastern Time, the sound may be caused by meteors passing through the earth’s atmosphere. People in New York, Canada and other places reported that they not only heard loud noises, but also saw a fireball across the sky. “When a meteor passes through the atmosphere, it produces a very loud and distant roar.”
Foreign media pointed out that although it is very rare to see a meteor during the day, if the meteor is large enough, it can pass through the upper atmosphere of the earth and be seen by people on the earth.
