November 30 WorkSafe New Zealand announced that it would prosecute three individuals and 10 institutions responsible for the eruption of the Isle of Wight last December, including two government departments. The volcanic eruption eventually killed 22 people. After the tragedy, the Work Security Bureau conducted an extensive investigation.
The head of the Work Security Administration said that the volcanic eruption was “unexpected” but not “unforeseen”. The court hearing is scheduled to be held in the Auckland District Court on December 15.
