The prosecutor’s office of the province of Lerida, Spain, said in a statement on December 22 local time that 61 elderly people died in a nursing home in the province due to the outbreak of COVID-19, and the judiciary has initiated criminal investigation procedures.
According to local media reports, as of December 22, 61 of the 150 elderly people living in the nursing home involved had died of COVID-19, and 42 of the 65 staff members had been diagnosed.
The Provincial Prosecutor’s Office of Lerida believes that compared with the epidemics in other similar facilities in Spain, the number of infections and deaths in the nursing home are extremely abnormal, and the prosecutor’s office is expected to bring criminal charges such as serious management negligence and endangering public safety against those responsible.
