December 30th – Erta Health Minister Finn announced on the 30th that three cases of mutant COVID-19 infection have been found in the country.
Finn said on social media on the same day that two of them were foreigners from the United Kingdom and the other was Maltese, and their infection routes were still under investigation. Three infected people have been quarantined, and their close contacts are also in isolation.
Officials of Malta’s public health department said at the weekly epidemic briefing on the same day that one of the two confirmed foreigners was a 37-year-old woman and one a 47-year-old male.
They arrived in Malta by plane from the United Kingdom on the 19th, and then tested for the novel coronavirus at the airport. They tested positive and were immediately quarantined. The third person is a 75-year-old Maltese woman, and it is not clear how she contracted the mutant coronavirus.
The official reiterated his call on Maltese people to maintain social distancing to curb the spread of the epidemic, while announcing that the country will continue to close bars and clubs until February 1 next year.
According to the data released by the Ministry of Health of Malta on the 30th, the country currently has a total of 12,665 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 216 deaths and 1,392 confirmed cases.
