Yoshihide Suga’s government approval rate drops to 33%, Taro Kono becomes a popular candidate for the next prime minister

January 16 According to a public opinion survey conducted by Japan’s “Mainichi Shimbun” and the Social Research Center on the 16th, the support rate of the Yoshihide Suga government fell to 33%, and the disapproval rate rose to 57%.

According to reports, the approval rate of Yoshihide Suga’s government when it first came to power in September 2020 was 64%, but since then it has been declining, and the disapproval rate has continued to rise. 

The Yoshihide Suga government’s response to the Coronavirus pandemic has caused widespread dissatisfaction. Only 15% of the respondents “given praise” and 66% of the respondents “not praise”. In addition, 71% of the people believe that the time for the government to issue an emergency declaration is “too late.”

The survey also asked the interviewees about their views on the choice of prime minister after the next general election. Yoshihide Suga, who was ranked first in November 2020, fell to third, while Taro Kono, who was in charge of administrative reform, rose to first.

Ranked second is the former secretary general of the Liberal Democratic Party Ishibashi, and former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe ranked fourth.
