KABUL, Aug 23 (Reuters) – More than 500 tons of medical supplies, including surgical equipment and medical kits to deal with severe malnutrition, were blocked this week due to controls at Kabul airport in Afghanistan, the WHO said on Wednesday.

“When the eyes of the world are on those who have been evacuated and the planes that have left, we need to deliver supplies to help those who have been left behind,” WHO spokesman Inas Hamam said in an email to Reuters, according to the report. She added that WHO was considering building a “humanitarian air bridge” to deliver supplies.

Aid agencies say it is vital that medical supplies and food be provided to some 300,000 people displaced in the past two months.

UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fowler said the same day, about 10 million children across Afghanistan in need of humanitarian assistance, the situation is expected to further deteriorate.
