UN experts call on US and EU to ease sanctions on Venezuela

Alena Dohan, Special Rapporteur of the United Nations Human Rights Council on unilateral coercive measures, said on the 12th that unilateral sanctions imposed on Venezuela by the United States and the European Union, among others, exacerbated the humanitarian crisis and called for the easing of sanctions against Venezuela.

Dohan visited Venezuela for 12 days to examine the “adverse effects of unilateral coercive measures”, and then submitted a preliminary report to the United Nations, recommending the relaxation of sanctions and allowing the Venezuelan government to use frozen funds in the United States, the United Kingdom, Portugal and other places.

The U.S. government has imposed several rounds of sanctions on Venezuela.

January 19 this year, the U.S. Treasury Department announced that the sanctions committee’s three individuals, 14 entities and six ships, claiming that the target of sanctions tried to circumvent the U.S. sanctions on the Venezuelan oil industry.

The Venezuelan government condemns sanctions such as the United States and the European Union, saying that the sanctions seriously damage the Venezuelan economy.

Dohan told the media on the 12th that the increasing unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States, the European Union and other countries are exacerbating Venezuela’s economic difficulties.

In addition, the decline in crude oil prices, mismanagement of the government and corruption have also caused Venezuela’s economic downturn to some extent.
