April 8th – A state-run juvenile detention center in New Hampshire, USA, exposed a sexual assault scandal of detained children by staff. On April 7th, local time, six former staff members were arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting 11 children in the past decade.
According to the Portland News Herald, two of the six staff members arrested were accused of raping a boy in his teens as many as 82 times in July 2019, which occurred between 1994 and 2005. In order to expand the investigation, the charges against the two people were temporarily dropped. They were arrested again on the 7th and charged with rape.
In addition, four former staff members were arrested, two of whom were charged with rape and two were charged with accomplices. One of the newly arrested people was accused of assisting his colleague in raping a boy, but he has been working as a teenager for nearly 20 years.
More than 200 people filed a lawsuit in 2020 claiming that they were physically or sexually abused by 150 staff members of the detention center between 1963 and 2018. Lawyers say these men were gang-raped and beaten by staff as children, forced to fight for food in “fight clubs” and held in solitary confinement for weeks to months.
