Sept. 16 2021 Four people have been killed and more than 20 injured in a car crash on a tourist bus carrying Chinese tourists in Utah, U.S., in 2019. 14 local time, surviving tourists and the families of the victims took the Utah government to court, accusing the state of failing to adequately ensure road safety.

Utah transportation officials did not set up warning signs on the side of the road, leaving little room for error in road design, and the kerb did not slow down to warn drivers that they were moving away from the center of the road, the Associated Press and Chinese Reported 15. In the 2019 accident, the driver was off the road, hitting the steering wheel when the vehicle lost control and overturned, resulting in all passengers injured or killed.

Chinese tourists said in the lawsuit that the unpaved shoulder was too deep and too soft for the driver to return to the road after he had strayed from the middle of the road. The lawsuit also claims that the section of the road where the accident occurred was resurfaced the day before, in dangerous contrast to the rough shoulder. The Utah Department of Transportation declined to comment on the case.

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board has previously concluded that road design, road signs and other conditions were not the cause of the accident, bus roofs and windows lack of safety standards is one of the reasons for the increase in casualties.
