January 15th, on January 14, the U.S. Department of Justice asked Toyota to pay a settlement of 180 million US dollars on Toyota’s failure to submit a tail gas emission compliance report in time.

The U.S. Department of Justice said that information such as tail gas-related recalls (recovery and repair free of charge) implemented by Toyota before 2015 were not accurately reported to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Under the U.S. Clean Air Act, Toyota is obliged to report vehicle defects and recall information related to exhaust to the EPA.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Toyota did not report to the Bureau accurately for 10 years before 2015.

In response, Toyota North America said that it took the initiative to report to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency after finding that it had not reported in time in 2015.

At the same time, the company explained that the impact of incomplete reporting on exhaust emissions is very small.

According to the U.S. Consumer News and Business Channel (CNBC), the $180 million fine is the largest civil penalty for violating EPA emission reporting requirements.
