Tokyo enters a state of emergency again, Japanese Prime Minister expresses determination to host the Olympics

by YCPress

Tokyo, January 7 Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced on the 7th that Tokyo and its surrounding three counties have entered a one-month state of emergency, but he also reiterated that the determination of the Japanese government to host the Tokyo Olympics remains unchanged. .

Yoshihide Suga said at a press conference held that day: “I am determined to host a safe and secure Olympics.” He said that once the vaccine starts to be vaccinated in Japan on a large scale, I believe the Japanese people’s enthusiasm for the Olympics will definitely increase.

Since assuming the post of Prime Minister of Japan in September 2020, Yoshihide Suga has made the same speech on many occasions.

In the seven days since 2021, he has expressed his determination to hold the Olympic Games as scheduled on three different occasions. The two were in the New Year’s speech on the 1st and the press conference of the Prime Minister’s Office on the 4th.

The situation of Coronavirus pandemic in Japan has recently taken a turn for the worse, with confirmed cases hitting records continuously, and the cases are mainly concentrated in the metropolitan area centered on Tokyo.

Suga Yoshihide announced on the same day that Tokyo and its surrounding Kanagawa, Saitama, and Chiba prefectures entered a state of emergency from 8 to February 7. This is the second time Japan has issued a state of emergency since April last year.

According to requirements, the number of people attending a large-scale event should not exceed half of the venue’s capacity (up to 5000 people).

Beginning in September last year, due to the slowdown of the pandemic, the Japanese government once relaxed the number of attendance at sports games, and the attendance of some football and baseball games even reached tens of thousands.

The worsening of the pandemic has brought a severe test to the Tokyo Olympics. According to the plan made by the Tokyo Olympic Organizing Committee at the end of last year, the Olympic test competition will restart on March 4th.

The first event is the FINA Synchronized Swimming Olympic Qualifiers. There were originally foreign athletes in the game, but now it seems that the prospects are not optimistic.
