According to Reuters on February 7, Iran’s state television news said that a few days after the United States announced that it would stop supporting Saudi-led military operations in Yemen, the United Nations Special Envoy for Yemen will visit Iran for the first time to discuss the Yemen crisis.

According to the report, the alliance led by Saudi Arabia intervened in the Yemeni civil war in 2015 to support the government forces in fighting against the Al-Allied Houthi rebels in Iran.

Saudi Arabia and Iran compete for influence throughout the Middle East, from Syria to Iraq to Yemen.

“The UN Special Envoy Griffiths has arrived in Tehran for a two-day visit, during which he will meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Zarif and other officials,” state television said.
