Public Health England is investigating a new variant of the coronavirus, British media reported Tuesday. There have been 49 cases of the variant virus, mainly in Yorkshire and the Humber.
Public Health England said it had been observing the VUI-21MAY-01 (AV.1) variant since April and had now listed it as a “variant virus under investigation.” The Bureau is conducting further studies through additional testing and tracking.
Public Health England said there was no evidence that the variant virus could cause more serious illnesses or make the current vaccination less effective.
