The resumed session of the World Health Assembly rejects the Taiwan proposals. Spokesman for the Permanent Mission in Geneva: It fully reflects the global consensus of the international community on the one-China principle

On November 9, the resumed session of the 73rd World Health Assembly refused to include the proposal of “inviting Taiwan to participate in the World Health Assembly as an observer” on the supplementary agenda of the General Assembly.

This decision is in line with the requirements of the relevant resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly and the World Health Assembly, and fully demonstrates that the one-China principle is the aspiration and general trend of the international community and does not allow any challenge.

Taiwan’s participation in the World Health Assembly must be handled in accordance with the one-China principle, which is also the basic principle confirmed by the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 and the World Health Assembly Resolution 25.1.

The majority of WHO member states adhere to the one-China principle and resolutely safeguard the authority of the relevant resolutions of the UN General Assembly and the WHO. China appreciates it.

The people of Taiwan are our compatriots, and the Chinese central government takes all necessary measures to ensure the health and well-being of Taiwan compatriots. Since the outbreak of the Coronavirus Pandemic, we were the first to invite Taiwanese health experts to study in Wuhan, Hubei. Up to now, we have notified Taiwan about 245 outbreaks.

Under the premise of complying with the one-China principle, the Chinese central government has also made proper arrangements for Taiwan’s participation in global health affairs.

Since 2019 alone, medical and health experts from Taiwan have participated in WHO technical activities 24 times, including WHO influenza vaccines. Important meetings such as the ingredient information briefing, the global vaccine safety summit, and the COVID-19 global research and innovation forum.

Taiwan also has a contact point for the International Health Regulations, which can obtain and release pandemic information from the WHO in a timely manner.

With the consent of China, the WHO Secretariat notified Taiwanese experts on the global pandemic situation in February, April and October this year.

The Taiwan region has also joined the “Coronavirus Vaccine Implementation Plan” jointly led by the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization and WHO.

The channels for obtaining various pandemic prevention and control information in the Taiwan region are smooth and effective, ensuring that the Taiwan region can respond promptly and effectively whether public health incidents occur on the island or internationally.

The Taiwan authorities claim that the so-called “international pandemic prevention gap” is just an excuse for attempting to participate in the resumption of the World Health Assembly and expand the so-called “international space”. Its plot to use the pandemic to engage in political manipulation is clear.

The World Health Assembly has rejected Taiwan-related proposals submitted by a small number of countries for many years, which fully reflects the universal consensus of the international community to adhere to the one-China principle. We advise the DPP authorities to understand the reality and not to go further and further on the road of seeking “independence.”

We also advise relevant countries to stop any actions that challenge the one-China principle.
