April 29 2021 Chicago police released a video of a 22-year-old man shot dead by police on the same day, and the victim shouted, “Why did you shoot me?” Police said in a statement that the victim was carrying a firearm.
The victim’s name was reportedly Anthony Alvarez. In the early hours of March 31, local time, Alvarez was pursued by police because he had fled the day before.
The video shows police chasing Alvarez for a long time, and as the latter walks to the lawn of a house, the officer shouts, “Drop the gun!” Put the gun down! Then at least five shots were fired.
“Why did you shoot me?” Alvarez then lay on the ground, rolling over in pain. The policeman replied, “Because you have a gun. ” Alvarez struggled to look at his cell phone and say, “I’m going to die,” and the blood soon stained Alvarez’s coat. Although the police gave Alvarez first aid, he died in the end.
Police issued a statement explaining that officers saw Alvarez holding a gun and thought he was going to turn around and shoot himself, so he would shoot. Police have not released the identity of the officer who shot Alvarez, but sources say the man is Solano, 29, a six-year veteran of the service.
Alvarez’s family was upset and saddened, and his father said, “We can’t live in a world where a small traffic violation leads to someone being shot, and Alvarez leaves behind a two-year-old daughter.” This is unacceptable.
